We’ve all heard the expression ‘Time is money.’ It’s meant to warn about the monetary costs of being idle. That is, the opportunity costs of not making money while we’re ‘young and able’, and the risks of spending the money we earn when we’re not ‘hard at work’.
Sadly, the ‘time is money’ mantra has seen many people trade their precious hours and years in the pursuit of more money and then – when they get sick, become ‘too old’, or lose a loved one – wonder where it all went and if it was worth it.
As a financial adviser, my job is to help people with their money – at least on the surface.
But in every meeting I have with people about their money, the conversation very quickly turns to the intangible things that don’t have a dollar value. They’re things like time with family and friends, exploring creative pursuits, finding a satisfying retirement, and the peace of mind that comes with living according to their values.
Time is the most valuable currency. Possibly the only one that matters. So use it wisely.
