There’s a variety of thoughts happening in our brain at any one point in time. We’re thinking about our to-do list, worrying about a heap of different things, replaying the past and planning for the future. Sometimes, your head space can feel rather full. And it’s during these times that we often neglect what we need to do most: rest our minds.

Spring brings a time where people want to declutter and clear their physical space. But it’s a good time to remind yourself the importance of also clearing your mental space. And the best way to do that is through sleep.

There’s been a wealth of scientific research that has shown us the importance of sleep. In 2013, a break through study came from neuroscientist Maiken Nedergaard at the University of Rochester, who discovered through a study on mice brains that during sleep, the brain activates a waste disposal system that clears out harmful proteins (proteins associated with Alzheimer’s) that build up between cells. Nedergaard has said, “You can think of it like having a house party. You can either entertain the guests or clean up the house, but you can’t really do both at the same time.”

When your brain doesn’t get enough sleep, toxins build up and diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia are closely associated with disrupted sleep. Sleep is also important for immune function, hormone regulation, mental health, memory, attention and having a healthy metabolism, to name a few.

In our busy, modern lives, getting a good night’s sleep has never been more important. Yet it’s becoming increasingly difficult to not be distracted by habits like checking your phone or watching TV before bed.

Good sleep hygiene will help you develop healthier sleep habits. And if you want to perform at your best, then you need to give your brain the time to rest and recuperate. Some tips on good sleep hygiene:

Make spring a time not just to clear your physical surroundings but your mind as well. Nothing less than seven to nine hours!
