Census releases ‘Claire’; the ‘typical’ Australian

ABS Census Reveals Claire the 'typical' Australian

Full census results from the 2016 Census will come out in June this year but the ABS have revealed the first part of the Census results a few days ago with a painted picture of who a ‘typical’ Australian is. Thank goodness because looking around, there’s so much diversity that we really needed an official stereotype to measure ourselves against.

Well on the bright side at least we know that enough people filled it in despite the cyber crash or general stuff up on census night last year. And what’s more, it seems the ABS had enough data to put together, including the 2016 Census name and address identifiers introduced for the first time last year.

We now know that a ‘typical’ Australian is named Claire. She’s a 38 year old female who was born in Australia with English ancestry, married, has two kids, lives in a house with three bedrooms and owns two cars.

She speaks English at home, her house is mortgaged, her highest year of school completed is Year 12 and she spends five to 14 hours of unpaid domestic work.

Women continually outnumber men (in fact since 1979), but the average Australian male is a year younger than the average Australian female – 37 years old and by contrast, spends less than five hours a week on domestic work.

Other ‘typical’ stats include the birth of our parents. Although ‘typically’, Australians have both parents born in Australia, in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia, the ‘typical’ Aussie has at least one parent who was born overseas.

Last year, the ‘typical’ migrant in Australia was born in England and is 44 years old. Again, it differs between the states with the ‘typical’ migrant in Queensland born in New Zealand, Victorian ‘typical’ migrants born in India and New South Wales ‘typical’ migrants born in China.

The full census data will be released on 27th June this year.

Speak to you then Claire.
